India Unveils $35 Laptop Prototype

Developed by research teams at the Indian Institute of Technology and the Indian Institute of Science, India recently unveiled a 1,500 rupee touchscreen tablet prototype, equivalent to $35 US dollars. This price encompasses all of the hardware, including the motherboard, processor, 2GB memory, wireless card, display, as well as the software which will be Linux-based.

I recently upgraded to an Android phone and a friend of mine asked me if I had put any antivirus software on it. My first reaction was “of course not…why?” And then she put the fear of malware and viruses in my head by mentioning that the Android operating system is a variant of Linux and since the Android marketplace is completely wide open, there was a good chance I could download an app that had malware or a virus. It made sense to me, at least at first. After all, I can’t tell you how many times I’ve had to clear malware off my laptop in the past year. Far too many times, believe me.

Starbucks offers free Wi-Fi

Following in the footsteps of other larger retailers like McDonalds, Starbucks is now offering free, unlimited Wi-Fi at all of its stores in the United States and Canada. Effective on July 1st, a Starbucks Reward Program membership is no longer required, no username or password is needed, and there is no longer a 2-hour restriction to accessing their AT&T wireless Internet. Free Wi-Fi has long been the top request of Starbucks customers.
