Cloud Computing

Creating a big, multi-billion dollar enterprise like Microsoft or Google takes a certain type of personality. You must do things nobody else has done. Bill Gates, Larry Page, and Sergey Brin all saw the value in new technologies and worked to make them a reality. Now, both of these companies are competing in the software market. Microsoft has long dominated the email, office tools, and web browser markets. Their customer list is enormous and most new PC consumers still find Microsoft software pre-installed. Even with well-established alternatives like OpenOffice and Lotus Notes from IBM, Microsoft is leagues ahead of everybody else. This is where Google steps in.

Mobile Phone Anti-Virus

I recently upgraded to an Android phone and a friend of mine asked me if I had put any antivirus software on it. My first reaction was “of course not…why?” And then she put the fear of malware and viruses in my head by mentioning that the Android operating system is a variant of Linux and since the Android marketplace is completely wide open, there was a good chance I could download an app that had malware or a virus. It made sense to me, at least at first. After all, I can’t tell you how many times I’ve had to clear malware off my laptop in the past year. Far too many times, believe me.

The Down Low on 3-D

We’re geeks, admittedly. We’re quick to embrace and adopt new technologies. Being tech junkies, we’ve certainly gone to many 3-D films in theaters, and we’ve done our research on 3-D home entertainment. Most people are still pretty confused about how it all works, so let me try to clear things up. First things first…

Symantec Offers New Norton DNS Protection

Triggered by the popularity of Blackberries, iPhones, Internet-capable gaming systems, and most recently, the iPad, there are now more than 10 billion non-PC devices that connect to the Internet. The majority of these devices do not have security software loaded on them, leaving them vulnerable to viruses, spyware, and malware. What might be even scarier is that it puts other devices on the network at risk if an attack is capable of spreading to other nodes.

Solid State Drives: SSD = Go

I recently had the pleasure of upgrading a laptop from Windows XP to Windows 7, but more importantly, an upgrade from an older SSD drive to one of the latest Trim enabled drives…all I can say is, wow! After a fresh Windows 7 install and full migration of data and apps, I’m seeing under 30 second boot up times…and Outlook loads instantaneously!
