Should IT be Part of Company Cost Cutting?

During rough economic times, the natural reaction for most companies is to hold back on company spending to keep costs down.  Naturally if something isn’t broken, why fix it.   That’s a very good solution to cut down on waste, but should your IT be included in the cost cutting?  Our answer: Yes, but with an explanation.

Our dependence on technology grows stronger each day and for good reason:  Good IT means more efficient business processes.  Now that doesn’t mean that a company should have the latest and greatest technology out there, but it does mean if left neglected, company efficiency can go spiraling down.   For any business, especially during our economic crisis, loss of efficiency means loss of revenue.   We have to work harder and smarter.

To sort of hit home, remember the day when the office got new computers with new software? The first couple of days was a little slow due to the new learning curve, but after a week of usage, wasn’t everything so much easier and faster to get done?  Having the right IT at the right time can help a company grow, but having the right plan and knowing what sort of equipment to get is key to reducing cost.

So how can you have efficient IT without the large bill?  It’s simple:

  1. Get an IT evaluation – Having a professional understand your business needs and be able to translate it to IT needs is critical to keeping costs down.  You never want to purchase something that you find out later wasn’t needed.
  2. Have the right IT Support Vendor – Many times, companies choose an IT Support vendor who is low cost.  Low cost is not bad as long as the vendor has the resources to support your IT needs on different levels.  That includes when systems are running smoothly, straight through to complete system crash.  With the later situation, you never want that to be the point when you realized you made a mistake by choosing the wrong vendor.
  3. Constant Monitoring and Evaluation – Having a close eye on your IT is vital for maintaining productivity and cost.  You never want your team to fall behind on a client project due to inefficient piece of hardware/software.  Being proactive can keep your company ship moving ahead without delays.
