Symantec EndPoint Protection 12.1

Symantec Endpoint Protection (SEP) version 12.1 has been on the market now for about a month and is becoming a new standard for businesses of all sizes.

These days there are far more threats being generated each day than ever before and although it always seems like you’re playing catch-up to the virus and malware creators, SEP 12.1 is leveling the playing field a bit.

It’s estimated that there were about a quarter of a million viruses “out there” about three years ago. But according to Symantec, over the last year the growth of malware has increased to somewhere around 55,000 new ones each day. With this kind of daily ‘growth’ of malware and viruses, creating viruses signatures to combat them simply isn’t enough to stay ahead of the game.

The most recent version of SEP, 12.1 includes a technology Symantec calls “Insight”, which collects data from 175 million systems worldwide and then scores the files based on various factors. Insight can also allow harmless files to be white listed, reducing security scan time significantly.

Also included in SEP 12.1 is “SONAR”, Symantec Online Network for Advanced Response, which “examines programs as they run, identifying and stopping malicious behavior even for new and previously unknown threats.”

The important thing is to make sure your virus/malware protection is up to date and installed on all of your machines. Being lucky isn’t a good strategy to staying virus free.
